With the success of fantasy adaptations of Game of Thrones, The Witcher, and now Shadow and Bone, TV executives seem to be scrambling to adapt more beloved fantasy books into TV series and movies, and this makes my nerd heart happy indeed!
I loved the first six seasons of Game of Thrones, loved The Witcher, and also BBC’s take on His Dark Materials. And more recently, I was blown away by the amazing Netflix adaptation of Shadow of Bone! These are some of my favourite books, and seeing them brought to life is a magical experience. Long may this trend continue!
Nothing gets me more excited than learning some of my favourite books are heading to a TV screen, and here are six that I can’t wait to learn more about:
A Court of Thorns and Roses
A while ago, there was news about a possible adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s other YA fantasy series, Throne of Glass, yet nothing ever came from it. I’ve read all of Maas’s books and would be happy for a TV series of either, honestly. Thus I was quite surprised to learn that a Hulu adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses is coming! But who could possibly play Rhysand?
If you don’t believe me, check out Sarah J. Maas’s Instagram for proof that we could be going on an adventure with Feyre soon. And with the amount of swoon-worthy romance in the books, I reckon fans will love this!
City of Brass
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Daevabad, and now the trilogy has ended with Empire of Gold, what better way to celebrate than with a Netflix adaptation announcement? According to S. A. Chakraborty’s official Twitter last year, we’ll be seeing the fabled City of Brass come to life! There’s no news on casting yet, but I can’t wait to see what they do with this complex adult fantasy so full of magic and culture. It’s proof that 2020 wasn’t all bad news!
Ninth House
I would literally read anything by Leigh Bardugo, but Ninth House is definitely my favourite of hers, as much as I loved Six of Crows! Announced back in 2019, Bardugo’s adult fantasy is going to be developed by Amazon Studios into a series. Set in a fantasy Yale with spooky ghosts, it will have a different vibe to Shadow and Bone and focus more on the urban fantasy and thriller side. Though after such a massive success with Shadow and Bone, I really can’t wait to see how Ninth House will look! Though really, I just want Darlington.
Tamora Pierce’s Tortall Series
As you’ll probably know if you’ve hung around my website before, I am a massive fan of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall series. It is such a massive fantasy world stretching generations that I’m honestly surprised this wasn’t optioned before now. Unfortunately, there have been very few details since it was announced back in 2019, which is why I am so desperate to learn more. If they decided to start at the beginning and cycle through the series, then that would mean Alanna and The Song of the Lionesss, and that would look amazing on the big screen!
The Poppy War
It took me a while to get around to reading The Poppy War, despite all the amazing things I’d heard, and wow, I devoured the trilogy pretty quickly! It’s lucky for me then that last year, R. F Kuang announced that her East Asian-inspired fantasy series will be heading for TV! The Poppy War featured some amazingly brutal battles and war scenes which would look incredible and I can’t wait to learn more. I especially can’t wait to see Rin summon her phoenix.
We Hunt the Flame
One of my favourite modern YA fantasy books because it just hit all those perfect tropes, Hafsah Faizal made the epic announcement earlier this year that We Hunt the Flame will also be turned into a series. Again, not much details are known yet, but I’m expecting adventure in the desert with a ragtag group of heroes!
