A quick guide to unfamiliar words and locations in The Chosen One Con world:
Things and Locations
- Aefenhold: The city of Aefenhold is a large capital city previously named Alderholm. It has multiple distracts and borders the Bayle Sea to the south. It is ran by the Arcanum.
- Aether: A type of magical electrical energy derived from aetherstone. It can be used as a power source, or to cast magic.
- Aether Ore: A type of glowing blue rock that is mined from the ground and processed into aetherstone, a crystal.
- Aetherpowder: A finely ground version of aetherstone that can be added to potions and ingested, allowing the user to activate magical effects.
- Aetherstone: A glowing blue crystal that is manufactured from aether ore. Aetherstone can be shaped into various sizes to fit enchantments and spellrings, which are then used as a conduit for casting magic. It can also be ground into aetherpowder.
- Aetherwaves: Refers to MV broadcasting.
- Aldren Palace: The marble palace that one belonged to the royal family, located in Bluefield Gardens.
- Aldren Royal Family: The monarchy that ruled Aefenhold when it was known as Alderholm, before mages took over and installed the Arcanum. There are no known descendants of the Aldrens alive today.
- Aldevale: A small village to the east of the Emmerley Woods.
- Arcanum: The council of five Archons that rule the city of Aefenhold, and their goverment. The Arcanum also refers to the floating aetherstone above Magus Tower.
- Archon: One of five blue mages that runs the Arcanum. These are known to be the most powerful mages in Aefenhold.
- Arches, The: A tavern in Oldtown.
- Argent: The police force of Aefenhold, under the command of Sevrina, Archon of Order and Defense. They are known by their silver uniforms.
- Bayle Sea: The southern ocean that leads to Red Rock.
- Block, The: A holding prison for the Argents in Luetear Wharf.
- Bluebell: Processed aetherstone that can be crushed and snorted or smoked to produce a potent high. The magical equivalent of meth.
- Bluefield Gardens: A series of public parks and gardens in north-west Aefenhold.
- Blue Mage: The highest level of mage obtainable. Blue mages are allowed to choose a singular mage name to indicate their status.
- Blue Sugar: A sweetened version of aetherpowder that can be added to food as a safe additive that boosts food shelf life and taste.
- Center for Medical Mages: The largest hospital of Aefenhold, located in Stoneridge.
- Church of the Holy Stone: The main religion of Aefenhold that worships the ‘holy’ aetherstone and views magic as a gift from god.
- Cobalt College for Magical Engineering: The main college/university in Aefenhold that teaches magic and technology, located in Stoneridge.
- Cobalt River: The main river of Aefenhold.
- Dren/Drenny: The currency of Aefenhold.
- Emmerley Woods: A wooded area to the east of Aefenhold that connects to marshes deeper in. Many refugees from villages from outside the city enter through these woods.
- Fenwell: A lower-middle class residential area and neighbourhood in east Aefenhold. Known for their Fen cakes, a local pastry.
- Highbridge: A upper class residential area and neighbourhood where the aristocracy live in mansions.
- Indigo Dream: Processed aetherstone that can be crushed and snorted to produce a high. The magical equivalent of cocaine.
- Lapis Leaf: An aether-infused plant that can be smoked to produce a high. The magical equivalent of weed.
- License: A magical license is required by the Arcanum to become a mage and use certain enchantments, spellrings, and potions. These levels in order of education level are black, bronze, silver, amethyst, and blue.
- Luetear Wharf: The docks to the south. They receive shipments of aether ore from Red Rock.
- Mage: A person who practices magic.
- MagiPhone: A video phone.
- MagiScreen: A type of computer-tablet like tech that is effectively a newspaper sheet with a screen that can display looped messages like a video.
- MagiVision/MV: A magic-powered television that displays TV shows broadcast across the aetherwaves. The MV has three channels.
- Magus Tower: The largest mage tower in Aefenhold, which belongs to the Arcanum. A large aetherstone glows above it. Located in the centre of Magus Way.
- Magus Way: The centre of Aefenhold. It is surrounded by the five mage towers of the Arcanum, as well as Magus Tower in the centre, and is also home to many businesses and stores.
- Medical Mage: A mage that specialises in healing magic with an education in medicine.
- Midnight Greenhouse: An upmarket brothel in Riverside ran by Valerian Thorn.
- Motorcar: A vehicle powered by an aetherstone motor.
- Oldtown: The poorest district of Aefenhold to the south east and bordering Fenwell and the Stacks.
- Potion: A glass bottle that contains a drinkable version of a magic spell. Drinking the potion activates the spell after 15 minutes, though some spells can be fast acting.
- Red Rock: A small island to the south of the Bayle Sea known for its large underground aetherstone mines.
- RJ’s Bar: A piano bar in Riverside with a queer scene.
- Riverside: A shopping and entertainment district in west Aefenhold, bordering the Cobalt river.
- Sigil: A series of symbols that make up a spell. These symbols can be simple or complex, and include commands on what a spell does and how its triggered. Sigils are learned by scribes and etched into tablets.
- Spell: A magical command made up of sigils and powered by aether.
- Spellring: A type of enchantment where a small programmed spell is powered by an aetherstone and carried around in a ring. The spell is often activated with a switch or button.
- Stacks, The: The industrial district of Aefenhold to the south, full of factories and warehouses.
- Stoneridge: The heart of business in east Aefenhold. Known for its many mage towers. Stoneridge has many businesses and admin offices.
- Stoneridge Studios: The biggest MV studio in Aefenhold that broadcasts across the city via the AAC.
- Tablet: A tablet is a small block (think a programming chip) where a spell sigil is carved with instructions on what the spell is and how it is activated. A metal version is added to enchantments, such as spells or pendants. An edible tablet can be dissolved into a potion.
- Vial: A glass bottle that can be used to store a potion.

- Aefenhold Aetherwave Corporation: AKA AAC, the main MV broadcasting company of Aefenhold, owned by the Arcanum.
- Aetherial Goods: A store that sells magically-enhanced food.
- An Hour of Opera: A MV music show featuring Nightingale the opera singer.
- Arcane Armaments: A store that sells magical armour and weaponry.
- Azure Allure: An upmarket store that sells enchanted clothing for rich mages.
- Benny Bluebell’s Magic Hour: A MV show that teaches magic to children, hosted by the enigmatic Benny Bluebell.
- Calling to the Stars: A MV documentary that follows the lives of celebrities such as Celestia.
- Corinth’s Confections: A bakery known for their scones.
- Ellington Enchantments: A store that sells enchantments, spellrings, and enchanted clothing.
- Forget Me Nots: A bakery known for their Fen cakes.
- Highbridge Hearts: A MV soap drama focussing on the lives of the rich mages in Highbridge.
- Ignite Inventions: A company that specialises in creating magical weaponry, such as staves and gauntlets.
- Mage Versus Magic: A MV show about competitive duelling between mages. Aefemhold’s main sport.
- Magic on the Catwalk: A MV fashion show featuring Celestia.
- Magic Mogs: A MV show for young children.
- Mage Tower Makeovers: A MV makeover show focussing on mage towers in Stoneridge.
- Medical Mage Mysteries: A MV drama documentary following the lives of medical mages in the Center for Medical Mages.
- MV Weekly: A TV guide and gossip magazine.
- Mystic Moments: A MV show dedicated to psychic predictions.
- Phantom Phial: A brand of affordable potions known by their purple branding and marketing slogan, pop a potion. They have stores throughout Aefenhold.
- Royal Regis: A brand of high-market potions by Archon Regis known by their gold potions and their marketing slogan, for the discerning mage. They have a factory in Fenwell and stores throughout Aefenhold.
- Spellout: A MV show about mages who compete across magical obstacles courses.
- Stoneridge Street: A MV soap drama focussing on the lives of working class mages in Stoneridge and Fenwell.
- Soulstice Emporium: A store that sells health-based potions.
- Tenpenny Tinctures: A budget-friendly potion shop located in Riverside.
- The Art of Aether: A MV show and book dedicated to the life of Archon Ignatius.
- The Chosen One Show: The new MV show hosted by Archon Thalia broadcasting highlights from the contest to select a new Archon as part of the chosen one prophecy.
- The Herald: The main newspaper of Aefenhold.
- The Mage with the Golden Flintlock
- The Heart of Magic: A chat show where host Archon Thalia interviews various mage guests.
